Work in Progress

Some work in progress sneak peaks of the fold-over tote and millinery, which will be complete in two weeks. The juxtaposition of the handbag and millinery photographs really look like a collection because of my color choices. I’ve been using a lot of green and black lately, trying to stay away from the extremely bright colors I usually go for to mix things up a bit and challenge myself.

Flip Flops

I dream of summer… it was so cold today, very windy.

This is a presentation board of flip flops that I recently put together.  Really makes me miss the warmer weather. The holiday season will make the cold seem worth it very soon. For now I will bring color back to my life with design. Stay warm everyone.

Hobo Bag

I have been working on a new bag. The front and back of this zippered hobo bag are gathered for a full look. I made a muslin mock-up and adjusted the patterns; will be doing a lot of sewing in the next couple of days. Below are my mock-up, patterns, lining, material and hardware selection for the final, and a sketch.

Fall Boot Designs

It’s starting to feel like fall outside and I wore boots today for the first time this season. One good thing about cold weather is that it provides a great excuse to accessorize.

I added a new page to my portfolio. Fittingly, it features fashion boots for fall. Here are some of the designs, please check out my portfolio to see more.

Envelope Bag with Weaving

This is the finished envelope bag that I mentioned in a previous post. This bag was designed and made by me using original patterns. I designed the flap ornamentation to match the lining I selected. Cowhide outer with decorative leather weaving and reverse applique, printed cotton lining, interior step up pocket. Magnetic snap closure and removable shoulder strap.

Lolita Oxfords

These shoes were designed and made by me using original patterns. Velvet, pleated cowhide, sheepskin, and velvet trim outer, metallic kidskin lining. The leather laces feature decorative sheepskin heart-shaped aglets with contrast stitching. Leather soles.

Fun fact – The black cowhide in these oxfords is a production waste scrap from Knoll that I got during a factory visit.

A Beginning

Hello Everyone,

My name is Svetlana and I am a student on the track of becoming an accessories designer. I live in Brooklyn, NY and am constantly surrounded by fashion, especially when I venture out into the city (which happens practically every day). I love color, patterns and texture in combination with clean classic lines and shapes and incorporate this aesthetic into my work. I love vintage finds and look for ways to bring the style to the present. I also love toys and children’s books, which I collect, and you can always find me with a cup of tea in my hand.

CandleAshes is an online pen-name I’ve been using for years and now it became the name of my blog. I will use this space to showcase my handbag, shoe and other designs (including my process), crafts and clothing I make, as well as some vintage finds and other things I consider to be of interest (i.e. art projects, exhibits, adventures).

Some of my work at the Pratt Show.
